Recipes from a Normal Mum

Giveaway & review #29 – World’s Best Cakes recipe book

Who doesn’t love cake? Not me! I am always the one who says yes to a slice of something cakey and delicious. If you like to bake cakes from corners far and wide then this book might be for you, cakes from all over the world by Roger Pizey, a leading chef. Roger has researched recipes from national favourites such as American Boston cream pie and British Chelsea buns to exquisite small treats including Russian walnut tea cakes and French madeleines. Each recipe is accompanied by insights into the history, culture and traditions associated with each cake. Even better there are recipes from Mark Hix, Marco Pierre White and Lucas Glanville dotted throughout the book.

What did I like about this book? It’s weighty, it feels like a serious book. There are so many recipes you’ll want to make it’s hard to choose what’s top of the list. I like that so many celebrity chefs have lent their recipes to Roger, they’re great endorsements, especially if like me, you hadn’t heard of Roger before. Another great thing? There are very few obscure recipes from far flung places that have been included for geographical context rather than on their merit as a recipe. These are recipes you’ll want to make. And the photography is clear, contemporary and under styled, which is a change for a cakey book.

What didn’t I like about this book? The chat about Roger and his chef pals, whilst it adds a seriousness to the book, can feel a little exclusive. There are little sections about the best places to enjoy cakes in major cities across the world too. Not a bad thing at all but obviously this information will date in years to come. I’m a bit old fashioned and like my books to stand the test of time in that regard.

I have 3 copies worth £30 each to giveaway. There are lots of ways to enter – see the Rafflecopter form below. The first way is just to leave a comment on this post. Easy peasy. Closing date 6th December 2013.
